this photograph shows Evel being lowered into the X2 just minutes before takeoff, notice at the very end or bottom of the rocket there is a round white plate with a hole where the steam or exhaust comes out. the chute is  located within that white plate.
the second photograph was taken  one half of a  second after Evel hits the go button, it clearly shows that the white plate has been blown off by the massive force and the chute lines are trailing out the tail end. the chute opened in a mili second after the engine was fired. there was nothing Evel could except to just hang on for the ride.
the snake river chute malfunction has been a sorce of controversey for many years and MCJ.com is proud to bring you 100% proof of exactly what happened that september day back in 1974
many people have said "he chickened out and pulled the leaver early" but the worst case sceniaro was for the rocket not to get across the canyon and land in the river, Evel was so tightly strapped in that it took the rescuers over a half hour to get him out even on the bank of snake river, but if he had gone into the water there was absloutly no way he could have gotten out alive and Evel knew this all too well so to pull the chute early was a 99% chance of a slow death under water.
the first I knew about this was from a man we call "The Duke" thanks Earle! the wondering is now over thanks to you!
here is the latest photo taken directly from a super 8mm. film shot by Dr. Mike Burcon. it shows the chute cover plate  twisted at the base of the ramp after the blast off.
note. Mr Burcon's film is currently for sale on ebay.
